The Boott Cotton Mills is one of the oldest surviving large-scale textile mill complexes in the United States. Situated on the Merrimack River, it used water to power weaving machines with the roar of industry and build Lowell, Massachusetts into one of the most vigorous industrial centers of America. In this great "cathedral of industry" the clock and bell tower rose above the rumbling machinery to regulate life's daily activities.
