Print Size: 14" x 17" (Frame Size: 16" x 20") Artist: Joseph Pennell
The great 20th-century urban artist Joseph Pennell early distinguished himself with etchings of urban architecture while living in London. He returned to the United States in 1917 and undertook a series of New York views, many from his upper floor apartment in Brooklyn. This powerful watercolor, conceived in tone rather than line, overlooks the docks in Brooklyn toward the recently completed Municipal Building in lower Manhattan. The center-stage Brooklyn Bridge, offset by a halo, glitters and dissolves into the night. The dream-like atmospheric shows the clear influence of the brilliant British painter James McNeill Whistler, whose biography Pennell co-authored with his wife.
