Quick Overview

The house of Captain Samuel Trevett is a fine example of Georgian architecture in New England, where the abundance of wood made timber framed clapboard construction popular. Having conquered the wilderness of embattled early settlers, colonial shelter gave way in the 18th century to new demands for architectural style. The carefully proportioned 5-bay façade is composed for formal effect, its major decorative element being the central doorway and projecting stair. Internally, the house follows a typical Georgian floor plan of 4 nearly square rooms, 2 in the front and 2 in the back, separated by a central stair hall. Two great fireplaces, expressed outside with symmetrical chimneys, signaled the comfort and status of the home-owner, a Bunker Hill war hero from a prominent mercantile family.
