Quick Overview

The Neue Wache, Karl Friedrich Schinkel's first building in Berlin (1816-18), is a highpoint of German classical architecture, austere and monumental despite its relatively small size. The original 1 1/2-story interior was altered in 1930-31 to serve as a memorial to the fallen of World War I. In 1993, following Germany's reunification, the serene and "monumentally void" hall was dedicated a national memorial. Under a disc of light from the central oculus, the space is quietly and powerfully focused by Käthe Kollwitz's wrenching pieta sculpture "Mutter mit totem Sohn" (Mother with Dead Son).
