Quick Overview

The Operan, or new Opera house, was the second royal performance hall constructed on the same site in central Stockholm, and the first, and by far the grandest, of the five city theaters executed by Swedish architect Axel Johan Anderberg. The Operan is Sweden’s national stage for opera, but it is also suitable for ballet, musicals and operettas. The building is therefore equipped with an enormous stage and wings, and a dense and varied profusion of support spaces, all held together by a strongly axial, and almost completely symmetrical, organization of parts. Guests enter from the street through a large foyer with a grand marble staircase, and from there proceed to a 1,200-seat auditorium in 3 horseshoe-shaped tiers. On the left, closest to the proscenium, is the Mayor’s box; even more privileged on the right is the king’s box, surrounded by generous royal apartments. Behind and all around is a labyrinth of stage facilities, dressing rooms, administrative offices, and public support spaces.
