Spiraling through the center of the Grand Hyatt in Shanghai is a circular atrium rimmed by guest rooms and annular corridors that pulse with projecting open balconies. The hotel occupies the top 34 floors of SOM's Jin Mao Tower, the world's tallest building (1,380') upon completion in 1998. The hotel on floors 56-87 was also the world's highest. The 88-feet diameter atrium is still among the world's biggest, looping hypnotically to a clear height of 377 feet.
