The 11th century fortifications aptly called “Rocca” are the oldest and highest on the peak of Monte Titano in San Marino. The impregnable tower grows from field stone and rough cut ashlar at bottom to precisely shaped stone blocks at top, all reinforced with heavy interlocking quoins at the corners. The parapet rests on a corbelled brick arcade with classic Ghibelline merlons (castellations shaped at top like a 2-pointed swallow’s tail).
