Although shortened for convenience to San Marino, the official name of the world’s oldest surviving sovereign state remains an apt description of what was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008. The third smallest country in Europe, it stands 2,457 feet above sea level, completely surrounded by Italy. The 11th century fortification “Guaita” occupies its highest peak.
